
Most works that “make it big” and are considered “good” became famous because they broke social norms + literary conventions of their time. Given that what is decent is socially constructed, and given that the works that are successful + transformative (and thus “good”) are the works that break those social norms in an interesting way, most good writing is “indecent”.
It is, perhaps, an overgeneralization, but I think it’s a valuable way of considering one’s own writing. Trying to fit a story into a moral framework is helpful but should not stop people from experimenting. A lot of things we accept as moral today will be immoral tomorrow, and a lot of things tomorrow accepts as moral will be immoral the day after that.
