The humble chicken thigh. Cheaper than tofu + more protein per gram

Chicken cheap too, just don’t get red meat and you’ll be okay

processed soy is still half the cost of chicken. the people claiming plant-based diets are more expensive are either lying, do not purchase groceries for themselves, or are just stupid

Yep, it is a little bit more expensive per pound, unless you go and look for what’s on sale I’m not saying it’s more expensive but chicken taste way better and good macros However I do like putting tofu in the air fryer, it’s a lot easier to cook than chicken since there’s not a risk of salmonella so you could just eat it from the package if you want

Ok yeah I just saw and like yes most chicken is around the same cost or slightly more expensive (unless you look for deals) However pre diced chicken breast is crazy 😭

Look how expensive tofu is, $10 for not even a pound?

you’re paying for bones too yk. i chose the ground chicken bc it’s just the meat. unless y’all are making broth out of the chicken scraps (i doubt). more protein is meaningless for the majority of Americans. not only are doritos loaded with plant and milk proteins now, but most people already consume too much protein, at least more than they need

and you cherry-picked the vendor item tofu, ignoring the half dozen other tofu options in the $2-4/lb price range. talk ab disingenuous. i chose the ground chicken to match with the ground beef i chose, with the assumption that the ground meats are cheaper than whole meats

Behold the boneless skinless chicken thigh, also Doritos have 2g protein per serving idk why you mentioned those

Ground chicken is not cheaper btw. You were literally looking at prices you could have easily found that out

notice, $3.22/lb > $2.22/lb. it’s a close match with the organic tofus though

with bones that you cannot eat. paying for wasted weight

upvote 1 downvote
🦧
Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

but yes, most of the bone-in options for chicken are cheaper. probably because you lose a lot of the value in dead weight, and you have to process the meat further if you do not want the bones. regardless, plant-based diets are not classist

Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

i chose ground chicken for multiple reasons. 1) to compare to a pound of ground beef 2) it’s just the meat without the bones 3) it’s easier to compare because of the previous reasons

The boneless ones I commented, cheaper protein per dollar. also homemade chicken stock is absolutely delicious. Use that when cooking rice or ramen man it’s divine

again, most people already consume more than enough protein. if you’re really minmaxxing your protein, sure, but us normal folks eat to fill ourselves, not to bulk

I wouldn’t say they’re classist, I was just pointing out the price issue in the post. Plants are a very necessary part of the diet, regardless of chicken/beef/tofu it should be served with veggies anyway But I don’t think cutting out meat makes one any more or less moral

If you’re not worried about protein then why tofu at all?

upvote 1 downvote
🦧
Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

it’s not a moral argument. it’s a matter of climate impact. animal agriculture is responsible for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, is the driving force behind extinction and biodiversity loss, the driving force behind deforestation and land degradation, on top of polluting and using too much water. there is an ethics argument to be had, i never make that argument though

Anonymous replying to -> _orangutan 21h

animal agriculture uses well over 80% of all agricultural lands, while providing less than a third of the calories in our diets. we can and should sustain ourselves on less, or we risk collapsing our food system and creating widespread famine

I’m all for eating less beef, but chicken and beef are vastly different in their environmental impacts. Both land usage and water consumption

Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

because the anti-plant based folks love talking about how expensive tofu is, when in reality, it’s cheaper than most meats

Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

they are, and i have chickens. we eat their eggs though, not the hens. that being said, there is an ethical argument to be had, most of y’all just don’t care, which is fine, but i just need to let y’all know that facts do not care about your feelings. all of the science points towards producing less meat, which means us consumers will naturally eat less meat as a result

Eggs technically are worse for the environment than tofu, how then would you figure you aren’t contributing to the same environmental issues you’re preaching against And how far down the “do it for environmental reasons” pipeline do you go down, To be fair this entire conversation and the other ones you post/debate under all use electricity and are dependent on data centers

upvote 1 downvote
🦧
Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

it’s about minimizing impact. on the hen debate, people have kept animals for thousands of years with minimal impact on their ecology. it has only been with capitalism and its industrialization that the planet has been pushed beyond what it can regenerate. the 5 hens my family keeps does not require nearly as much land or resources as a factory farming operation, surely you can see that. also, we do not slaughter our hens, so we’re not constantly breeding chickens like factory farms do

🦧
Anonymous replying to -> #2 21h

you’re seriously trying to compare me, a person in the suburbs who keeps chickens, to the impacts of factory farms, entities that literally convert thousands of acres of wild land into farmland, just so a few people can have meat. it’s not comparable, even more so when you factor in the waste affiliated with commercial meat operations. further, the eggs produced that we don’t eat are not wasted, unlike with factory meat and eggs. they are shared with my friends and neighbors, and what waste is

i also don’t drive! another thing folks can do to lessen their strain on the planet, and more importantly, free their wallets from oil, automotive, and insurance companies. we are going to use electricity and are going to continue to do so, the point is to reduce the total amount we use, or else we risk civilization collapse because our climate is collapsing

Assuming that you supplement their food with grain and didn’t build the coop out of completely recycled materials, the eggs you are getting from your hens are at best comparable with commercial eggs when it comes to environmental impact. (Egg per egg produced) and overall worse than plant based diet
