I eat meat. Not eating meat is cheaper. Tofu isn’t the only non-meat food. Beans, veggies, and grains are cheap, effective staples in combination with one another. It’s what agricultural societies have subsisted on for thousands of years.

Orangutan didn’t tell you to go vegan. 99% of the time im sure eating slightly less meat is actually cheaper.

Look at the cost of meat vs the cost of tofu

i think it’s just decreasing meat so it’s not daily consumption. i’ve been lots of places where it’s just rice and beans and whatever livestock or fish are local. not saying replace meat with tofu, just like not every meal and/or not every day

Unless you live on some coral atoll where seafood is the most available source, meat is almost always going to be more expensive than grains. But if you are a subsistence fisherman, you aren’t who orangutan is talking about

yeah, imo local is always the best choice if possible

Yep, and we can be conscious about our plant consumption too. Generally, most meat is going to be more resource intensive to produce than most plants. But it’s still a good idea to avoid something like almonds if possible.

I think that a broad resource consciousness for consumption is better than when people make blanket statements about total veganism. But generally speaking a resource-conscious diet is going to have fewer meats involved

Food deserts:

Food deserts are a problem. Typically very cheap dried staples like rice, beans, and pasta are present though aren’t they, and heavily used by the impacted minority communities. That’s still a situation where grains are cheaper than meats. It’s fruits, veggies, and fresh meat that are less available in food deserts.

Obviously food deserts are a problem, as is the lack of widely available healthy balanced diets within them. I still think in a food deserts beans are going to be cheaper than meats.
