Yes, troops were ordered by the government not to do any violence in the square, and were ordered to occupy the square by any means necessary. There was some violence in Beijing as protestors blocked the troops from reaching the square

Hundreds to a couple thousands is speculation. What was officially reported is that some violent rioters and “a small number” of bystanders died, as well as troops

There is footage of the event, but they don’t show it because it goes against the narrative that China massacres thousands of people in the square

Sadly true. A lot of it is speculation. The biggest estimate that I saw was one from the BBC that claimed ~10,000 people died

Yes it is in the surrounding streets. The “massacre” refers to that massacre that happened near Tiananmen Square even if it was not in the square itself, since that was the hub of the protests.
