A better term would be right-wing populist or illiberal authoritarian Trump isn’t ideologically motivated like fascists, he’s a non-ideological pragmatist focused on his own interests rather than the state’s We still have an independent Congress, independent judicial branch, and a system with checks and balances Calling Trump a fascist just doesn’t fit the definition of fascism beyond the one-sentence summary

The problem is I could go on to explain my views, one of which is small government (I know I know the horror,) and somehow get called a fascist.

I think y’all need to read up on the definition of fascism bc Trump does not fit it lol I agree that Trump is a danger and an authoritarian-esque leader but calling him a fascist is just historically untrue

you better not be one of those mfers commenting in the original post bc this complicit attitude makes perfect sense in that case.

He fits this to a tee. Funny I didn’t mention his name though and you still put it together lmao

Fascists did things for ideological reasons, Trump is not ideological, he’s merely a self-serving pragmatist, he has no grand vision or plan

bc Trump doesn’t actually believe half the things he says, he’s a pragmatist, not an ideologue, if supporting social democracy became his best bet he’d support it, fascists wouldn’t

Just because he plays as someone operating solely for self-interest does not mean he isn’t clearly setting the groundwork for a future regime lmao. It’s obvious to anyone with more than two brain cells bouncing around in their thick skull

I'm not convinced. But he's still a fascist whether he believes it or not.

the framework for fascism in this country has existed for centuries, it’s just clearer to white people now than it was 10 years ago

I agree

I just think “fascist” has come to mean any authoritarian right figure that’s ultra-nationalist rather than its actual historical definition

I can have a conversation with small government conservatives who want to limit taxes or regulation. I cannot have a conversation with someone who thinks it's ok that trump is building concentration camps.

the carceral system are glorified concentration camps, again this is nothing truly new

also FDR is called one of the greatest U.S. presidents in history and he put Japanese Americans in concentration camps, Native American reservations fit the concentration camp definition too, we’ve had concentration camps in this country nearly as long as we’ve been a country

Correct, this country has always been evil and must be destroyed

yeah, this is the way we’ve treated dissidents and POC for most of our history, its still disheartening, but unfortunately its frankly not surprising

I think we’re getting caught up on semantics too much yk; bc I fully agree regarding the frameworks of fascism being the institutional foundations of this nation - we’ve always been fascist (to the point that we inspired many of the tactics the Nazis of the third reich used, such as using gas in their concentration camps (see our “bracero program” and its method for “decontaminating” immigrants via fumigation) but I believe trump absolutely is a fascist, even if he may not identically match the

Most prominent examples throughout history; especially if we’re going based off the “14 characteristics of fascism” (by no means *the* definition, but one of many attempts to define commonalities amongst fascist regimes)
