I’m not talking about h1b visas which mainly go to advanced degree holders, I’m talking about h2b visas which would legally allow for the kind of temporary seasonal work that undocumented people do. The left made a huge fuss over companies hiring immigrants to do seasonal labor in hospitality and such
I understand that the left is very pro immigrant in theory, but the moment you bring up actual solutions they almost always get mad and say that the visa program will suppress wages for Americans. I think it would be helpful for all of us to actually think about what we want rather than reflexively jumping to argue for or against one side just because of vibes
OP and 3 may not be familiar with Bernie’s immigration stances, which differ from the Dem establishment. Bernie is not as pro-immigration and actually agreed with some on the right about H1-B (can’t remember if he did so explicitly though). He also called H1-B recipients “low-wage indentured servants from abroad”, which isn’t entirely wrong, but incredibly insensitive to a population that was actually subject to real indentured servitude under the British Empire
My understanding is that the current immigration system already suppresses wages because immigrants are incredibly vulnerable. If they’re given protections like normal citizens AND minimum wage is increased then everyone benefits. The leftist position here is workers, no matter their background, should be treated with dignity.
