The fundamental issue is that the left doesn’t really want immigration either, which is why actual reform doesn’t happen. Actual reform would mean opening up visa programs to lower skilled jobs but leftists would then get mad and call it wage suppression

Wasn’t there a huge backlash from the left last year over the lower skilled h-2b visas that let companies legally hire unskilled international workers for jobs like hospitality and such?

Some aren’t fans of it, but this isn’t an issue the left is unified on by any means

I remember Elon melting down over all that, not the left

Why am I being downvoted? He said that immigration is good because it brings in talent and the left said that we should restrict immigration to protect American jobs. It’s pretty clear that the radical left has no real opinions other than opposing their boogeymen

Because you’ve yet to address the fact this isn’t a unified issue on the left and you continue to mischaracterize it like it is

I’m not talking about h1b visas which mainly go to advanced degree holders, I’m talking about h2b visas which would legally allow for the kind of temporary seasonal work that undocumented people do. The left made a huge fuss over companies hiring immigrants to do seasonal labor in hospitality and such

Once again, not a unified issue. Acting as if the entire left is against immigration is disingenuous at best and just fucking stupid at worst 💀 do better lmfao

I understand that the left is very pro immigrant in theory, but the moment you bring up actual solutions they almost always get mad and say that the visa program will suppress wages for Americans. I think it would be helpful for all of us to actually think about what we want rather than reflexively jumping to argue for or against one side just because of vibes

And I also agree with the more radical leftists on most issues but immigration it makes me scratch my head because idk wtf they actually want

OP and 3 may not be familiar with Bernie’s immigration stances, which differ from the Dem establishment. Bernie is not as pro-immigration and actually agreed with some on the right about H1-B (can’t remember if he did so explicitly though). He also called H1-B recipients “low-wage indentured servants from abroad”, which isn’t entirely wrong, but incredibly insensitive to a population that was actually subject to real indentured servitude under the British Empire

It rubbed me (an Indian) and other minorities the wrong way and he should have clarified what he meant. I support him and his policies but I didn’t like that

My understanding is that the current immigration system already suppresses wages because immigrants are incredibly vulnerable. If they’re given protections like normal citizens AND minimum wage is increased then everyone benefits. The leftist position here is workers, no matter their background, should be treated with dignity.

Yep, absolutely. But he didn’t make that clear in his statement, so it didn’t come across well
