That’s the problem. Directors have TOO MUCH freedom nowadays. If it’s getting to a point where republican royalty like Sir Christopher Nolan are ignoring history and putting black and trans people in their movies on top of that, we need a studio to say no
who gives a fuck? christopher nolan is a pretty conservative guy, so even you guys should know better than to think this is some kind of woke/dei casting. nyong’o is a great actor, and if nolan sees a vision for her, i say let him bring it to action.

Not to mention OP’s replies about “good” unfaithful adaptations are total bullshit. The Shining is a 7/10 at best and Christine is Carpenter’s worst movie. Highest 2 Lowest was woke Disney garbage. The Godfather is the only true one but even then the third movie SUCKS! What the fuck is wrong with you?

Who am I even kidding? I’m giving Kubrick too much credit. The Shining is a shaky 6/10 hindering on a 5 and every movie he made after that was even worse.

are you gonna be pressed that Hunchback of Notre Dame isn’t faithful to the original storyline by making Esmeralda a true Romani instead of a white girl kidnapped by a Roma woman? 🧍🏼‍♀️ Or that Phoebus is an amalgamation of two characters? or that the stage play version has a deaf actor as Quasi and one of his gargoyles speaks for him as the actor for Quasi uses ASL? like… these are STORIES with fictional characters. if the story is good, a few genderbent characters won’t ruin the project…

I think that’s cowardly. Disney couldn’t adapt a story fucking properly to save their rainbow asses.

funny enough… it’s the best adaptation of the story that we have to date. the story is already racist as fuck against Roma to the point that the slur is embedded within the damn story and they let that shit fly the whole film… might as well have at least gotten rid of that super racist part portraying Roma as evil cruel witches. If you’ve got time, listen to WeroTheGreat’s long video about Hunchback on Youtube and their interview with the animation director, Tab Murphy.

I mean… have you SEEN Disney’s Hunchback recently? They absolutely did not hold back on that story… besides not making everyone fucking die in the end bc that’s just Victor Hugo being lugubrious, per usual. The sexual tension, the criticism of the church, the overt racism being portrayed instead of a shitty animal allegory… during the into chase scene, i began translating the Latin lyrics of the music and omfg it’s horrific, i had to stop translating i was so uncomfortable!

so are you saying “directors have TOO MUCH freedom these days” also applies to 1998 then…

Why are you getting so riled up over a kids movie? This was supposed to be an adult discussion about the sanctity of source material and the unmoralness of unfaithful adaptations.

Look I don’t fucking know about specific years dude I’m just saying these days directors are making these too woke and ignoring history in the process.

It’s a film that is an adaptation of a major literary feat by renowned author Victor Hugo… which had its freedoms for changing some parts of the story, some of which to make it family-friendly, but it still just so happens to be the best film adaptation of the original source material. is that not still relevant to your post? just bc its animation doesn’t make it less applicable to your statement🤷🏼‍♀️ i just like discussing film. wanted to have a good faith conversation about adaptations

I never said anything about animation. I’m not Mickey Mouse. All I said is it’s for kids.
