So you are excluding part of their identity from a community because of their religion which was quite literally the point of the OP. I don’t think you realize how problematic your last sentence is also 😭 this is no different from someone saying I don’t accept you for being gay but I respect you as a person
ppl hate a dissenter, but idc now. it isn’t incriminating to think god is fake. people are just uncomfortable w the thought, and i can acknowledge that there are benefits to the construct of christianity but i don’t have to agree w religion or consider it valuable framework to base your life on. i’m allowed to think god is a delusion, and i’m allowed to say christians can cope til there’s evidence for it. i don’t disrespect queer christians, i just don’t agree with it and i don’t have to
Speaking as a queer Christian, my religion is to me as inherent a part of my identity as my queerness. If you’re a religious person, you don’t really see it as a choice. I can respect (and agree!) on an intellectual level that there are historical institutional harms of the Church, but to specifically go out of your way to publicly discount someone else’s spiritual leanings (eg belief in God) feels, quite frankly, a little… wrong?
what’s even more incredible is people ignoring the very valid point that religions like christianity actively cause marginalization of queer people + POC. if you can’t admit that but you can for another religion, get honest. i just find it hypocritical to support an ideology that systematically hurts the people you claim are your community. i can think that and coexist with religious queer people because religion is an opinion, not an inherent part of your identity (like queerness).
well i’m talking about christianity specifically. your brain isn’t hard-wired to christianity, you’re conditioned into it (sociologically, whether you believe in it or not). of course it’s important but being wary of christianity isn’t anything like being homophobic. the difference is that there’s a reason. intellectually, it makes sense to debate god. just cause it feels “wrong” is exactly my point. you have to think outside the box to get to the truth
Ik you’re talking about Christianity specifically, because if you said “Allah is a delusion” or “people with belief in Hindu gods are delusional”, many here would be uncomfortable because they can recognize that’s inherently disrespectful to someone who’s part of those religions. That’s more my point, is all
