hot take: queer christians can and do exist, but it is okay and right to point out the harms that religion perpetuates for marginalized groups. it also makes perfect sense for people in our community to be morally opposed to religion based on its effect
queer christians exist and should be welcomed in the community just like anyone else <3

No one said it wasn’t okay, just that being unaccepting of people within the community for being a part of a religion as well isn’t okay. You don’t have to like religion but you do have to be respectful of other people’s beliefs unless you know they are actively doing something harmful (not just that others in the religion are harmful but that they themselves hold a specific toxic belief)

people are of course allowed to be wary of religion but that doesn’t give them the right to be disrespectful towards a religious person

i feel like ex-christians just take out their trauma on religion in general rather than taking the time to understand that religion is literally how so many communities are built. just because you have religious trauma does mean religion (even christianity) is to blame. you can still respect people’s belief in god even if you lack one yourself.

i didn’t say it’s okay to be hateful towards religious people. in fact, i said the opposite. i just mean that religious queer people should also understand the social taboos and ramifications of being queer and choosing to not be religious. you can respect someone’s beliefs and also acknowledge how the social constructs of those beliefs can be harmful.

So you are actively being hateful towards religion 💀 making blanket statements and assuming all must be inherently hateful or harmful IS being hateful towards religious people. There are ways to be religious without being homophobic or harmful in other ways. THATS why you’re getting downvoted, not because of “lack of receptiveness”

Hell I’m atheist 💀 I just know enough about religion to not discriminate because of trauma I’ve received from some religious institutions. Grew up with toxic Christians and had my mom call me an abomination to god’s creation but still don’t condone what you’re saying

And exactly 🙄 you’re just upset that other people are calling you out on your own bigotry. Being queer doesn’t suddenly make other kinds of discrimination okay. This community isn’t okay with you making this place unsafe and unwelcoming to other queer people with different beliefs than you.

communities built on christianity are built from rape, colonialism, and genocide. i just don’t like the idea of agreeing with an ideology that rejects, ostracizes, and exploits other queer people. just cause you haven’t been traumatized by queerness and religion doesn’t mean it’s okay to ignore those that have been victims of discrimination at the hands of religion. it’s a destructive tool that has built up some while tearing down queer, Black, and brown communities.

like if you grow up in any other religion you usually already have this understanding that not everyone thinks the same about god and that’s ok but i swear ex-christians cannot fathom this concept

dude i hate to break it to you but but christianity has also uplifted and built those same communities. why some of those communities had to adopt christianity is bad but you gotta recognize that a lot of black and brown communities were and are built around the church. i’m not even christian and i can recognize that. any organized group can cause harm but that doesn’t mean they are inherently bad.

religion is a way to bring people together whether you believe in god or not. i’m jewish and there have been statistics that show a majority of jews don’t even believe in god but they engage in the religion regardless because it is a matter of community and culture. religion is about community and finding people you want to share that with.

seriously? you wanna talk about nazis to the jewish person?? dude i think you’re just upset that some people have a better relationship with religion than you do

i’m not assimilating into a culture against my identity because being jewish IS my identity and culture regardless of whether or not i believe in god. that’s the whole point. religion isn’t just about belief it’s about culture and community. maybe your lens from christianity will never understand that but most other religions have a culture and practices that surround that culture.

yes i know. but you as an ex-christian atheist are taking it upon yourself to apply it to religion in general without taking the time to recognize how religion affects us all and means different things to people even other christians.

it’s called mutual respect. the average christian is not your oppressor the weird MAGA heads are. you are thinking about this the same way some antisemitic people do about jews as a whole cos zionism exists.

exactly. you can reject religion as much as others embrace it without targeting someone for that belief. it is just as valid to say you hate god as for someone to say they love god; mutual respect is key

The mythology continuing to cause the harm is does is not worthy of respect. It does nothing but harm.

Except that it is to blame. Mythology is harmful when in someone’s house and thoughts and outside of an academic setting.
