As someone that went to their national convention last summer it’s such a performative, do nothing org in most cities. Can’t believe I wasted 3 years of my life with them.

You mean the group that got Mamdani elected? Is sending multiple members to the NY statehouse? Is also sending multiple members to Congress?

Same tbh. A majority of leaders of my local DSA spent all their time fighting to do nothing, and the few people who actually tried to go out and do things were constantly getting pushback from people in charge who refused to act on ANYTHING.

The NYC DSA is a real socialist community. The rest are just too small to make any impact and they know it. Google a random DSA chapter and look at their activities schedule. Its just a reading club and maybe mutual aid

The DSA “electeds” have a very mixed track record and arent really accountable to the org. AOC voted to send money to the IDF. A DSA “elected” just means someone who is open about being a democratic socialist (cool I guess?) and had dsa members canvass for them

Easy to take credit for something multiple orgs pitched in today

I’m not discouraging anyone from joining, by all means, but outside NYC and maybe LA its basically a book club

Massive part of why I left, trying to get anything real done was an uphill battle because everyone was too busy trying to purity test one another and wagging their fingers

This is exactly what Philly DSA was

I couldn’t even get them to work together long enough to work on a community garden where most of the supplies were already donated

Not true, definitely varies by community. Metro Detroit DSA has a congresswoman elected (Rashida Tlaib! love her), now multiple city councilors, a handful of state representatives, and a few other minor positions (took back control of a local library board from conservative). They also run specific issue based campaigns.

They did not get Rashida elected, you give yourselves way too much credit when it’s a group effort

Ok you know what? I probably came in with the wrong attitude. Yes, it is 100% better to join the DSA than sit and complain. I simply mean that OP’s concerns are totally valid. Now if you want a wild ride… join the PSL 😂
