
Each chapter’s engagement varies a lot by area and can vary year to year. However, it’s still worth it to be a member as that allows you to both shape the future of the organization (nationally and locally) and connects you with other people and organizations in your area that may be doing work that is more specific to your needs/interests/talents. There currently aren’t other groups with the same centralizing of leftist resources as DSA.
Reading is not unproductive, and nobody said that it was. Reading lit is an important part of dsa AND at the same time, when the org that's supposed to be out bettering our communities is ONLY reading lit internally, it's frustrating. Especially when people are suggesting important actions like canvassing for abortion rights when they're on the ballot, building support for community members, and contacting our local officials to form bonds with them, and it's all getting heavy opposition
