I find it funny that yall agree that ppl are morally superior for not liking/being against HP but suddenly it’s a huge controversial issue when vegans are deemed morally superior for being against animal exploitation and cruelty
yes i do think im better than you for not liking harry potter, not sorry

being vegan is a lifestyle at the end of the day and it doesn’t always work for everyone in order to remain healthy. HP is fucking book series and interest. two very different things.

veganism ignores that theres eithical ways to eat meat, such as hunting and fishing. not to mention the environmental impact that come from large scale farming needed for mass veganism

There is no ethical way to kill someone for your benefit. If it’s for their benefit (ie to put out of their misery via euthanasia) it would be deemed ethical but hunting is far from that.

The environmental impact is far worse with current animal agriculture. All you need is one google search to find that veganism has the smallest footprint of any diet. The animals farmed for consumption requires loads of land including crop land for their feed.

Its ethical to kill an animal to eat. not for sport. to eat. use its all its parts too, don’t let it go to waste

Currently, with all the crops grown, including ones grown for animal feed, we could feed the entire human population 11x over.

cool, still ethical to eat meat

It is justified in a survival situation, not when you have the option to not kill (ie have access to a grocery store that has plant based items)

are you going to pay for those expenses that come with plant based? because i cant. and also its always ethical

Why choose to harm someone, when you could easily just… not??? Do you hear yourself? Youre defending harming others to achieve something that can be achieved by NOT harming others.

im not harming someone. animals are not people. You kill quick and instantly so it doesn’t get harmed.

Plant based foods are the cheapest. Processed alternative foods are more expensive, thats where youre getting confused. But that isnt necessary to be plant based. Just eat whole food plant based.

Okay but we have more consciousness than animals. Animals also lick their own butts, kill their offspring, and rape. Does that mean suddenly all of that is okay?

Dietary and medical conditions that require animal products are very rare, and would be justified bc it would be for survival

When did i say animals are people? Just because they arent humans doesnt mean we are allowed to treat them like shit actually!

And animals are sentient and experience pain. Do you have no issue with dog fighting? Or animal abuse? Where do your morals lie bc im failing to see that you have any, at least regarding animals that arent humans

Yea but HP isnt as harmful as animal agriculture is. Animal agriculture has a much larger negative effect radius, by ruining the environment, affecting marginalized communities, literally directly harming animals, and perpetuating many of the top diseases that affect and kill humans.

True. Being against animal agriculture is far more important than being against a mere book series.

yes it would be great if we could move away from animal agriculture and eat less meat but did you miss the entire part where i said it is literally not feasible for some people to go vegan?

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon

I didnt. I already said that that would be a survival reason and therefore justified, FOR THEM. Just because a select few are physically incapable of being vegan, doesnt give everyone else the right to exploit animals. And even then it’s still not exactly moral bc why does one person’s condition allow for them to harm others? We wouldnt accept that in any other injustice. Say someone has some condition where they can only eat dog and cat flesh, would it be morally acceptable for them to?

I think the best solution would be to invest in lab grown animal products.

Literally yes?? I feel like eating whatever you need to not die is morally neutral at worst. Like I wouldn’t shame someone for eating cat and dog meat if the only other option is them dying from starvation?

upvote 7 downvote

also calling eating meat immoral is just kinda racist. a lot of cultures revolve around eating meat and their recipes especially native cultures where the they hunt animals but actively respect and honor them in the process.

It’s not racist at all lmao. Pretty much all cultures consume meat. I’m not saying “only X group should stop eating meat”

What about eating other humans for survival?

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> OP 7h

Depends on wether they’re alive or dead already and if they consent to being eaten. There’s ways to kill animals where they will not realise they’re going to die, and then die quickly, like separating a chickens skull from its spinal column. The chicken does not know what the axe does, it does not know it will die. If you lead a human to a guillotine, because we have previous knowledge of it, the person would know, and be afraid. So it depends on a few things for me. But morally neutral

Anonymous replying to -> #8 7h

Like if you’re on an island with two people and no resources and no fish and no food but you have a gun. I’d say do what you have to survive. But also doing thought exercises in this way is like, what if the world was made of pudding

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #8 7h

I’d also say that I don’t believe many people would kill someone to eat them, even if they needed to survive. In most cases of survival cannibalism I know of, the people were previously dead. Unrelated, I know of some tribes that previously (and potentially currently) practice funerary cannibalism. I’d say it’s morally neutral because they believe that they are helping the persons soul. It’s not out of malice, but care.

Stay on topic though. In the end youre arguing in defense of harming animals for no good reason. That is a losing argument bc it’s inherently wrong.

The point of saying if cannibalism for survival would be morally permissible is bc it is similar to eating animals, who are also sentient and can experience pain. Why is one sentient being deserving of life, at the cost of another sentient being’s life?
