Fuck patriotism and fuck this country. This country was built on genocide and slavery.
I hate that the political right has co-opted patriotism so much that they made jingoism the baseline of patriotism. I love my country so much and its people that I want it to be better, but that’s no longer seen as patriotism

Hey I’m OP, I’m black and obviously a descendant of slaves, and I get what you’re saying but I don’t think the solution is to never want good for the country and its people because of the past.

The world would genuinely be so much better off without the United States 🫩 I get that it’s a beautiful place with good people and all but holy fuck we have some seriously bad people and innumerable war crimes also

Mind you, the slavery continues- the 13th amendment did NOT abolish slavery. Slavery is prohibited "except as punishment for a crime." Also notice that the U.S. has the highest prison population of any country in the world. Also notice how that population is disproportionately black. Also notice how that population is disproportionately Igbtq and/or disabled. I can't stress it enough- fuck this country

We can love and support each other without embracing nationalism or patriotism. We can even become better at supporting LGBTQ and POC people around the globe if we reject patriotism. Borders only hurt us.

Also so sorry- I feel that I’m coming off as very aggressive. I’m mad at the system. Not you. My apologies

I think you're just describing the kind of patriotism OOP is describing. Not a love of borders or the past/current government, but the promise of the freedom of diversity, and fighting when we are denied that promise. Patriotism has absolutely been hijacked to be synonymous with government worship and nationalism. Fuck that.

we can have freedom and diversity without the nation state. there is no U.S. without the systems of oppression that sustain it.

I guess I'm confused where you're getting that from the OOP or the comments? I don't identify as patriotic but I can respect OOP's vision of it as rejecting government worship and nationalism and wanting better for the land and people that are at the mercy of our government.

That’s not patriotism—that’s believing in building a better tomorrow.

Nope. Why should you feel pride about a nation that committed a genocide against your people and hasn’t meaningfully done anything to correct that?

By correcting it.

Then do that! Don’t feel pride in a country that doesn’t feel prideful about you

I hate this country. I want it to change because I care about people. And people, you know, live here.

…sure? I’m not disagreeing with you. I just think it’s wrong to have pride in the US as it currently exists. Make a country you can be proud of, don’t be proud of the shitty one we have

my country is america and it brought my my family, my friends, and the opportunity for change. i’m not proud of genocides or funding wars, but i am proud of my community and my people

Then be proud of your community. Be proud of your people. Neither of those are America.

nah it is though. being american is an implicit part of every american. i would be much different if i were from any other country. and i like who me and my people are. also btw saying native americans aren’t america is racist btw lol you know that right

Poor choice of words on my part. I should be saying the USA and USAmericans to be more accurate to that part. But to your point… American Indian tribes have always been separated by the US government. We live in an apartheid state, and it takes thirty seconds of looking at history to demonstrate that beyond doubt. The government schools were cultural genocide, and reservations are still underfunded and not treated with respect by the US government.

Be proud of your cultural identity, sure, that’s fine. Be proud of being an American Indian (of whatever tribe), be proud of being a, idk, midwesterner or New England-er or whatever. Thats not the US. Don’t be proud of a nation that is not proud of you, that actively rejects and suppresses you.
