in the 80s it was probably cheaper to get an older camera that took b&w photos than a newer color camera, similar to how it’s easy/cheap to get a low res camera nowadays despite having very high res cameras around, which makes things look older

Yes, but there are numerous colour photos of the AIDS crisis available, while it was cheaper, it’s not like colour cameras were hard to find. While some were definitely taken on black and white, the way that textbooks or “historians” portray this, the civil rights movement, etc using black and white pictures, is a strategy to create perceived time difference
