As a Jewish anthropology student, it pisses me off when people in 2025 insist on using “Semite” as a racial term ie: “Jews aren’t real Semites” or “Arabs are Semites too.” There is no such thing as a “Semite” unless you are a 18th c. race “scientist.”
Apparently we stole the term “Semitic” even though we were forcefully labeled as such by German race scientists. Make it make sense

Calling somebody a Semite is the same thing as calling somebody a mongoloid

(This isn’t directed at OP, but at the people they are talking about)

i think it is so darkly hilarious when people who call themselves anti racist say things like “Palestinians are the true Semites, Jews are not”

Literallyyyyyy like how did you go so far that you looped back around to actual 1700s race science and you still think you’re being progressive

I think some people also use the term for “person who speaks a Semitic language” which.,, idk is just so bizarre and confusing to me?

It’s much more a of a 19th century thing, where they kind of racialized linguistic groupings, which is where the racial sense of both “semite” and “aryan” come from (the latter in this instance being used to refer to the Indo-European language family writ large, not just the Indo-Aryan branch)
