Is this a crazy take? I have yet to meet anyone smart on the edge of either side. Every intelligent individual i know barely leans to one side or another.
i genuinely have yet to met a right winger who isn't stupid. I'm not even saying that to be mean, most people who aren't stupid aren't right wingers. Am I crazy or is this correct?

History bears out the opposite, at least on one side. The vanguard of the left has always been the most educated people in society. The more educated a culture becomes, the more left-wing it becomes. This trend is so widespread historically it is sound to take it as a rule of political development

i think there's less intelligent people on the extremes. those are the people that are heavily influenced by the people around them, and dont think deeply about their beliefs, just taking in whatever they're fed.

I think it kind of depends what you mean by the edge of either side? intelligent people tend to have an actual cohesive idea of their political position instead of just aligning with a party. That means they’re less likely to just say they’re strongly republican or democrat, but I’ve met plenty of very intelligent socialists.

The less intelligent you are the deeper you are in a party

i think the more intelligent people tend to be -leaning- one way or the other, moderate, or have a mixed salad of political opinions. those people often have strong beliefs but are able to listen to both sides and be less affected by bias. they're able to think through what they know and come to a conclusion on their own. after all intelligent people are more likely to admit that they dont know everything, and that there's more to learn.

i think a mindset of intelligence politically and intellectually is one where you're firm in your beliefs, but open minded enough to change your opinion if you realize you're wrong.

what we define as centrist or “barely leaning” here in the US is also much different than the rest of the world
