anyway this was just me making a goofy car pun about the movie but in all seriousness Anthy is def one of my most-beloved female characters in any work of fiction whatsoever ⚔️🌹🏰
wait a minute. so I came to the conclusion that Anthy was the true protagonist of the show all along, right that would mean that Utena’s role in the narrative is to be a “vehicle” for telling Anthy’s story…

That’s what makes RGU such an amazing show because even puns or jokes or weird stuff all amount to something and play a role in the shows symbolic narrative. It’s multifaceted and everything has a meaning not in a “curtains are blue way” but in an emotional, intuitive way. So even silly car puns have a dual purpose in the show

and I think it was sort of a clever writing choice that the only way to really See her, who she is and what she’s experiencing, is to revisit the show all over again from episode one with the lore from the last 2/3rds of the series still fresh in mind

exactly!!! it’s SUCH a rich text—even watching it as a kid i was able to understand some of the symbolism and that was a big part of what i loved about it, but revisiting as an adult there’s entire additional dimensions to pick apart

plus now that i’m a little more knowledgeable about certain Japanese art scenes & their history (esp the underground or avant-garde) it’s a lot of fun attempting to trace the influences & homages it wears on its sleeve
