good people are just as real as bad people. neither exist in an absolute sense, they're both shorthand for a combination of actions, words, personality, & temperament. some people are considered good people because they are kind, pleasant, they help others, etc. others are considered bad people because they don't do those things. but that's measured based on a given moment and might not reflect the feelings or past actions of the individual. life is rarely that black and white
They talk about giving up multiple times within the piece. Giving up on things that are filled with hope, then as they age they accept the patience that is required by living in reality. That’s why they opened with something like a fairy tale, setting the tone for the rest. As they grew their hope towards these experiences dwindled, calling it fiction. Pieces of fiction contain facts of reality. That doesn’t make hope entirely false, it just means some aspects of it are true and applicable.
hope being made up doesnt even make sense. it obviously isn't made up because it's an emotion that people do indeed experience, & may be correct. i agree about the subjectivity tho. i think the idea of good people and bad people is made up the same way i think introverts and extroverts are made up. its not black & white, it's dependent on context & definition, and most people arent one or the other exclusively
That doesn’t even address the explicit statement of comparisons to a piece of fiction 😭 you’re not wrong at all but you’re talking about how there’s different genres to people because of the gradients that come with colors, but how are you ignoring the fact they said works of fiction. I agree with you, but the writers talking about how their beliefs changed as they age. As time went on expressions look different, dreams change. I’m open to hearing what you meant tho because that’s sum different
to be honest i'm kind of confused by what you're getting at here. comparisons to a piece of fiction? i took their phrasing of saying "good people are a fiction" as in good people are not real, they are a made up concept. which i agree with, in so far as i believe bad people are made up. my point was mainly that this doesn't mean people aren't good, it just means nobody can be defined as just "good" or "bad". i'm not sure how that isn't acknowledging that the author's beliefs change as they age
We already don’t function well because no one abides to said moral compass, I’m not trying to be pessimistic or say there’s no hope. I’m saying it’s a concept that is made up, because nothing is innately good or bad it just is. People do things that they think are okay, that doesn’t make them better or worse than anyone. So the idea of having hope is unneeded if you have the ideation that no one is trying to be a horrible person intentionally. They’re people who do things that are bad.
And there are things that are societally accepted as good, but no single person alive is going out of their way to break those universal acceptances. People are so conditioned to idolize themselves that they don’t think they’re committing an act that’s breaking some moral code. They’ve convinced themselves they’re just living. Which is why I said the fictional aspect is hope, they’re hoping for a fantasy of life that doesn’t exist.
I never said hope is nonexistent, it’s fantasy. Meaning it exists in a made up scenario, your mind is making up the fact that things or people have to be one way in order to have that. You can have hope over something that doesn’t need it, patience is more appropriate of a term honestly. If you have patience toward the changes of life, then that is somewhat providing you with hope. Just having it for no reason is ignorance, they’re describing experiencing youthful ignorance and calling it hope.
