Sorry I was initially excited about it but I’m really feeling like this whole Balogun situation is becoming such a stain on the USMNT. Trump is dragging them into an obvious corruption scandal that’s taking away from an otherwise great performance

yeah it’s annoying how trump *appears* to have inserted himself into yet another thing that has nothing to do with him

They used the exact same rule (Article 27) for both Balogun and Ronaldo. If people are going to complain about Balogun they also have to complain about Ronaldo. And trump was most certainly lying.

Trump is senile and a known liar so I’m hoping he was just talking out of his ass

I wouldn’t be surprised if he did call Infantino about it considering that guy absolutely sucks his dick but I don’t really know how much it did to change the outcome. Considering FIFA has given basically no other explanation I think everyone is sorta left to speculate that it might not be complete bullshit

Well for the sake of considering how the world might be perceiving the USMNT, how do we know Trump had nothing to do with it? FIFA has basically provided no other explanation as to why they’re lifting the suspension. Do we think FIFA is above making some shady deal with Trump? They literally invented a “peace prize” to give it to him lmao

But they haven’t really explained why they’re invoking Article 27 in either of those cases. And the lack of explanation is basically a confession that FIFA don’t want to suspend stars or succumbed to some kind of pressure to let them play

Yes, but that’s a different issue in and of itself. This can never be a stain on the USMNT as you said, the precedent was already set.

Well if the US wins tonight, and especially if Balogun scores or something, the narrative will most certainly be about whether or not he should’ve been allowed to play. Arguably that’s already a stain on any success they might have now. And in my opinion this isn’t like a 1:1 comparison to Ronaldo who had a suspension pre-tournament, whereas Balogun picked up a straight red in a knockout match

A lot of ifs there. Also Ronaldo’s was worse. He was supposed to sit the first two games of the tournament and no one cared at all. The only part about this that could be bad is trumps statement, but anyone with a brain knows that he played little to no part in this decision. If ur saying this has the potential to leave a stain on FIFA’s rep then thats fair, but the US has done nothing out of the ordinary.
