to pay all of my bills i spend about $2500/mo (rent, utilities, gas, insurance, phone bill, etc.). add a 10% cushion and it becomes $2750. to make that much in a month, AFTER taxes, you’d have to be making over $20/hr working full time. most unskilled/low-skilled labor where i live only pays $10-12/hr, meaning you’d have to work 80hrs a week just to afford to live. no one is built for that
by the time you account for hours worked, the time you spend getting ready for work, and commuting, plus sleeping, you’d have like less than 24hrs left in your week to do literally everything else. like yeah you could get roommates but the rent’s gonna keep going up while wages continue to stagnate
i make $32/hr w/ a mechatronics degree, but not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to go to college or trade school. there are so many factors that affect whether or not a person is able to attend college or trade school. the job market is also fucked. i worked my way through college bc i had to, and the ONLY job that called me back after putting in TONS of applications was a food service job where i made less than $12/hr. I was barely making $1400/mo even with tips
i have a job lmao, i work 40-42hrs a week making $32 hr, have a great PTO policy, i got to take off work the whole week of Christmas through to Jan. 5th, blah blah blah. i have many friends who are overworked and underpaid bc so many jobs take advantage of people knowing that there’s always gonna be somebody desperate enough to put up with it all
my point is that even if someone is trying to attend school of some kind, not everybody gets the same financial aid or has help from parents. you’ve still got to afford to live while getting your degree and then you’re stuck in the unskilled jobs that are only going to pay a certain amount (and childcare does not pay $20+/hr lmao what)
