Our jobs pay us 14.00 an hour work us long hours into the night, at least my location does, we care about our tables take care of them try and get to know them so that their experience is better and then they buy a lot and they don’t tip if our jobs were to pay us a livable wage the food would be expensive and then people complain that the food is too expensive , it’s a pick and choose battle here in my opinion tipping should be mandatory

Another thing to add is that people who don’t tip have never put an apron on in their entire lives with out those tips I have to tip out the runners, busters, hostess, AND the bartenders at least 3 percent of each ticket I have on nights where I get stiffed I have to pay them out of pocket it’s not that us servers are trying to be greedy but the people who’s never worked in a restaurant don’t know how mentally hard it can be and no I’m not being like omg my job is so hard

I’ve never waited before, but I have worked in the food industry and I know how it is. Obviously there are dumb people out there, they do exist and they make the job 1000x harder. I’m sorry about it. Secondly, it’s a business. They’d charge as much as they can to maximize profits regardless. It’s a given that if we abolished tipping, food would be more expensive, but it isn’t our job to pay servers. It’s the businesses job. Tipping should be optional. The mind of guests coming in, it should solely be based on if the server actually gave good service. I see there’s videos of servers “teaching” people how to tip and others saying “if you don’t tip at least 20% don’t go out.” That stuff is ridiculous. All of that anger should be toward the business. Europe has no mandatory tipping and food is still affordable. Before you say “oh he’s a European”, I’m an American, but I have European roots.

The point is, the food industry doesn’t get a pass on just not paying their employees. Neither do coffee shops, or anything like that. I’ve gotten asked to tip and a self-checkout place before. Tipping culture is so dumb. Businesses use your feelings against you to get you to fork over more of your money and it’s wrong.

Honestly sometimes small restaurants are worse I’ve worked at a few family owned and they under pay you , have a tip pooling system you do most the work and get a big tip and then someone who does 0 work gets half of that if not more , not saying it’s bad there are family owned restaurants where people make a lot of money more at than at chain one end of the day, I’m always tipping 20 percent regardless of how the service is ( unless they are a bitch to me ) in my opinion as someone who posted

Well sure not all small restaurants are good, and fuck that socialism shit. The issue with tipping for bad service is it doesn’t encourage good service, my dad taught me instead of tipping for bad service to talk to them about what could have been done better and if they are smart they will learn and do better so in a way that is more valuable to them than a tip for not actually doing a good job.

The original post I do believe tipping should be mandatory when a check gets to a certain point, if a check is like 25 dollars okay yeah there’s really no need to tip it’s kind to but I won’t judge cus even 10 percent of the tip is like 1-3 dollars, however if a table is a big party orders hella food racks up a big bill, that’s more napkins throws silverware, cleaning up more plates etc my irritation last night came from a table who had a big party and left 0 after having a big bill and then

Well that sucks, but hey in that line of work you oughta realize not everyone will tip just do your best to work somewhere high end and do the best job you can so the chance of a tip goes high as it can be would be my advice to you, though the most important thing is location you could be a great server but if your at a place poor or middle class people frequent the tips wouldnt be as good as say a place where upper middle class/upper class people hangout.

90 percent of the time I’ve had people “ correct “ my service is becuase they were angry the food took too long even after I tried damage control we’re still blamed and told we’re a shot server just cus the kitchen fucked up , at my job we have surveys the customers do when something like that happens I always encourage them to do that survey the big bosses see them directly, I always say it helps us improve, especially if it’s not my fault or if it’s my fault please say it in that survey!

Well hey thats a whole different issue if the cooks are fucking up and not just occasionally I don’t think I’d stick around, people make mistakes sure but for it to keep happening and not just be little issues thats a problem. But it’s also why I wasnt and still aint very interested in that kind of work because how much you make highly depends on other people instead of just your own performance.

I make 12$ an hour as a cashier/cook/fry/drive through. It ain’t a lot and I could make more if I wanted but it’s very easy, pays the bills and I have a little money to save, I have another job in the service industry doing mostly landscaping at 25$ an hour and all that goes to savings, I do pretty well. Studying for my ged rn so I can become a mechanic and swap the fast food job for an apprenticeship which I’ll start at around 16-18$ an hour and my rate will go up as I get certifications.
