I keep noticing the decline of media literacy but wasn’t that what we were taught in high school English? Isn’t that when you’re supposed to learn how to think critically about texts and analyze the author’s intent? Why are so many missing that skill?

I was an honors/AP English kid my entire high school so maybe I was learning different things at a different standard, but don’t you still have to show enough understanding to pass the class? You’re still learning analysis skills right?

I don’t really think it’s their fault. Schools don’t always teach why their subject is important, so students think this knowledge is useless, and it’s also often not taught in a way that makes it engaging or particularly memorable. I don’t think it’s an individual issue but rather a systemic issue.
