It's a painting by artist John D Salvatore depicting Judge Holden, a fictional character and the antagonist of "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. This book is further based off a memoir by Union General Sam Chamberlain, of his times as a teenage bandit in Mexico. Holden appears in this account, and may have been a real man, albeit exaggeratedly evil in stories.
