This is gonna sound like a dig but I mean it in a genuine way, I appreciate their optimism. Many genuinely believe that if they work hard enough they can achieve anything. In a practical sense I disagree because wealth has a lot more to do with place of birth and luck than it does with work ethic. But still, a lot of those folks are grinders and I really admire that
As much as it pains me to admit it, I think that on a personal level, a conservative would be more likely to help an open liberal than a liberal help an open conservative. Intended examples being things such as a car with political stickers breaking down, or a counter-protester in need of medical attention.
Knowing many conservatives I know that many come from a genuine place, and want to make a better world. I just think many have been misled as to what that means and who is to blame. The problem is that white Americans have been lied to for centuries about who to aim their hatred against. It’s not Native Americans or blacks or Chinese or Mexicans or Jews. It’s the wealthy who take advantage of them and the systems which leave them disadvantaged.
See this classism shit is what I hate. I dislike conservative ideology but treating rural areas like they’re subhuman isn’t going to improve this country. What do you think the working class is? A whole lot of it is rural people. The racism is a problem, the bigotry is a problem. But we need to educate and bring education to rural areas. Not scorn them.
I have many conservative relatives and I love them deeply. And I have a deep appreciation for the rural southern culture I trace my roots back to. But that means I recognize the deep racism and misogyny embedded in it and want to clean it from those harmful elements. We can have good food and community and a love for the outdoors without bigotry.
