To be able to tax churches requires the government to have the right to deem something a religion or not, which opens up the door to Trump calling democrats a religion and then taxing them. Thats why the constitution forbids the gov. making that call

You can legally define religion to exclude political parties. The government just doesn’t bother with a strict definition because whenever they try to write one they get sued.

There isnt a requirement that churches not be taxed, there is a requirement that no law be passed pertaining exclusively to religious organizations. They register as normal non-profits

They are absolutely classed differently than most nonprofits. Unlike other organizations, churches can spend their money pretty much however they want.
