I can tell you why: 1. Cost of existence has been untenable for most men providing for themselves 2. “Third spaces” have been eroded in the younger generations

Now I understand why far more men commit suicide every year.

Also relevant to look at other variables here too. Women are 4x more likely to attempt suicide, pointing to the method by which it’s done. Self inflicted gunshot is nearly always fatal and the most common method of suicide that men choose. It’s done with conviction rather than by something which you can go back on.

Heavy on that second one — and on top of that it’s tends to be frowned upon for men to go alone. Hard to not feel lonely under these circumstances (though maybe not s*icidal)

And this isn’t really a “policy” problem, it’s a social norms on one

Another freakish fact is the “suicide bliss.” Shortly before a suicide, men’s attitudes will sometimes completely change to content and relaxation. The proposed explanation is that they’re at peace with it being their last moments. It happens in women too, but it’s at a lower rate. It suggests that women’s suicide attempts may be more heat of the moment while men’s will be planned well in advance.

And back to the gunshot point, i havent looked it up myself but im sure there’s a gender bias in gun ownership. It’s harder to survive or be saved from a gunshot whereas people can usually be saved from more time consuming methods

it's a major factor fs. definitely at the forefront of the issue

there is. people are 2x more likely to die by gunshot simply by living in a home with a gun, but this bias is why much of that statistic is the result of intimate partner violence committed by men against women

social norms and policy tend to go hand in hand. the thing is the social norms leading men to this behavior are largely promoted by men
