Oversimplifying things as usual, they've made certain limited, conditional liberal concessions that allowed them to more easily do business with the aggressively capitalist west. They remain a significantly centralized and state controlled economy today while simultaneously being massively successful. Its growth and liberalization don't actually line up that cleanly, and state-directed investment and planning has played a major role in the former
