Why is Gerrymandering “saving democracy” in Virginia and California, and only be an issue if done by Republicans in Texas. Shouldn’t gerrymandering be outlawed all around. Can’t everyone across the political spectrum just be against gerrymandering?

Because the dem gerrymandering was in response to blatantly racist redlining by GOP politicians There is a reason the VRA exists

Because VA and Cali are doing it in response to Texas

The biggest difference in all honesty is that Texas just did it, didn’t ask the people to vote or hear their voice on it. California I know let the people vote on which map they wanted. I don’t know the details on what Virginia did, and if they did it without the people’s support like Texas did I’d definitely criticize them for it

I’m a Virginian who’s undecided (tilt no tbh) on this vote but arguments like these won’t be what sway me

Ok, Texas did it first, but Illinois and Maryland have done it for a lot longer. By the way, if in theory I lived in Texas and they theoretically put gerrymandering on the ballot it, I would have voted against it. I abhor what they did, I should have mentioned that.

For example, I live in Alabama; a state that was forced by the VRA to have its districts approved by the courts because of its extensive history of districting explicitly to make the black vote meaningless

Heyyyy let’s just look real quick at which states tend to be the most gerrymandered. Well look at that, it’s mostly the southern states trying to exclude black voters.

Also gee I wonder if there’s been any attempts to ban gerrymandering federally. Oh well look at that, if you look it up, democrats have tried to ban it multiple times and it’s been blocked by republicans each time

VA’s 5 republican congresspeople should all get together and draft anti-gerrymandering legislation. They won’t though lol

I condemn republicans for not voting for this. But, are you referring to a bill that is packed with other stuff like legalizing felons voting and legalizing voting by illegal immigrants. Or are you referring to a bill exclusively about gerrymandering.

Nobody was trying to legalize illegal immigrant voting bruh what are you talking about

I would need to look more into that, I think it was that “For the People” Act. Either way, it wouldn’t rly sway my vote either. It just wouldn’t help the Republicans’ case

I am trying to figure out what bill you are referring to. If you are referring to what I think you are it loosens voter id requirements which in effect do that even if not explicitly mentioned. But, if there was a bill solely about prohibiting gerrymandering i would be all for it.

The Redistricting Reform Act of 2021 was solely about banning partisan gerrymandering. It was blocked by republicans.

I’m going to go ahead and delete my comment about VA House Repubs voting against gerrymandering reform. The only thing they were able to vote on was the For The People act

*while i think they should have voted for it*, it had items other than gerrymandering. They should still introduce anti-gerrymandering leg. Would help them keep their jobs

They’re asking us to approve an amendment that would allow this redistricting and then return it to a bipartisan commission later on. So Virginia was also asking the voters to approve it instead of just doing it.
