people think that they just have to convince atheists their specific god exists, but the truth is, if god was real (he’s not) that motherfucker is the most evil thing conceivable if they created a universe like this. if god were real we should kill him

Tbh they usually don’t bother to try to prove their specific God they just assume that’s the default and then do some apologetics for “see this is why a creator must exist” and assume that defaults to Protestant Christian sect #3846

Imo the problem of evil is mostly just a problem in the context of modern abrahamic conceptions of deities which are supposed to be all powerful and all good. It’s less of an issue with gods who don’t have both their traits. But usually these people are arguing for a Christian God and not like Vishnu or Ahura Mazda

Oh yeah sure, but the argument against those conceptions of god is just that religion as a whole is a culturally dependent social construct

It’s a lot easier to view Christianity in the same way we view polytheistic religions if you look at its history and deep polytheistic origins. It’s just that there’s this interesting trend where the main deity in a faith becomes more and more abstract and grandiose until it becomes more of an overarching cosmic being you have to deal with philosophically differently.

Oh yeah absolutely, I wasn’t claiming Christianity was fundamentally unique or anything!

This happened in Zoroastrianism and the abrahamic faiths of course, but also happened in Hinduism’s Bhakti movement where Vishnu, Shiva, or Devi are viewed as great cosmic beings that contain the cyclical universe.

Yeah ofc ofc and it’s totally logical why we focus on Christianity because we live in a Christianity dominated culture. I just think it’s really interesting to uncover parallels. And also wild to learn stuff like how Yahweh used to have a wife.

Yeah absolutely! And that originally ancient canaanites worshiped Yahweh alongside a whole pantheon of other gods and goddesses

Yep. I think some of the reading I have done talks about how Jewish Yahweh was probably a fusing of the gods Yahweh and El and there’s some interesting stuff about the biblical patriarchs being a fusing of different ancestry traditions. But I don’t understand all of it fully. Neat stuff.
