Not sure why everyone is acting like “goy” can’t be used derogatorily. It isn’t a slur, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used pejoratively. It’s kind of like a Southerner calling someone from New York a Yankee

Yeah it can be used derogatorily obviously. So can gringo and yankee. But a lot of people mistakenly believe it’s a slur when used in any context, when that’s inaccurate.

I’m asking this genuinely, what makes something a slur? Like, if it’s used as a slur, how is that different from being a slur? Idk about the specific term we’re discussing here, I’m just curious about where you’re coming from

No. *Some* Jews do. Saying “they” and referring to all Jews is kind of playing your hand here. Some southerners use yankee pejoratively. It’s not always a pejorative. Goy is not inherently derogatory. Some people using it that way does not redefine the whole word.

Generally a slur has to be for predominantly pejorative purposes. Its purpose has to be to offend and dehumanize. Goy just mean “non-jew” like gringo means “English speaker,” yankee means “northerner,” and pom means “English.”

Can all those words be used derogatorily? Yes. But is that their primary purpose? No.

An ethnic out-group term refers to outsiders generally (e.g., "foreigner," "non-Jew") and may be neutral, descriptive, or mildly derogatory depending on context. Conversely, an ethnic slur is always pejorative, designed to insult specific ethnic, racial, or national groups, and often carries severe, hateful connotations.
