I like how celebrating the 4th of July means you're celebrating the worst parts of America and not the best. This country has done great things and it can keep doing great things. Don't let Trump or any other weirdos convince you otherwise.

We were the first country to be founded on enlightened ideas, we’ve been the leaders during the most peaceful and prosperous time in human history, we’re the wealthiest country ever, we’re a large successful multi cultural nation, we’re leading in many scientific fields and we have the best colleges in world. I can go on and on.

First point just means we are new- we also started the whole race based slavery so…. Not sure where enlightened ideas are “Weve been leaders during the most peaceful time in history” so… have other leaders? Maybe you meant we “led the charge”, but I would disagree with that one We are the wealthiest country, but thats not accounting for size of our country- per capita we fall behind a bunch of countries

We are multicultural! That I Can agree with, but thats more circumstantial imo. Ill still give it Best colleges is a bit subjective, theres no globalized standard for education. The scientific advancement part IS a point, but thats very subjective to needs and what we consider “important scientific advancement”

No it’s not there are more recent countries that weren’t based on those ideas. Races based slavery was not started by the U.S.. Other leaders have not been. We’re a 11th and when you cut out the tax haven microstates we’re 5th which is impressive for a large country.

Study social history- the concept of race was developed in colonial America to justify slavery

That is not circumstantial the U.S. is a huge immigration hub and our policy reflects that. This entire convo is necessarily subjective so that doesn’t rlly mean anything to just call it subjective.

Race based slavery was first practiced by Portugal and Spain but I believe it was first legalized in a systemic way in English colonies.

Eh, we can both agree America’s multicultural foundations are a net positive, I simply think it was developed based off of bad practices and policies. I still would prefer our current multicultural spot than say your average European country

Yesnt? Its a little hard to say where specifically it was first practiced, but the systematic approach to race and slavery was developed specifically in order to provide a good enough justification in the eyes of christianity for the transatlantic slave trade, which was done by english colonists aka the foundation of America

Idk we can water down any country’s history by listing random bad things idk how this is rlly compelling. I feel like everyone goes through the bell curve iq meme of starting at US good next you learn some things then it’s US bad then you make it relative to other places then it’s US good again.

Its more so im curious what of America’s history your celebrating vs the ideals that you want to celebrate I don’t particularly think America has a history of doing amazing things, but I do believe in americas ability to progress and the ideals that most people associate with America Again, I never wanted to go “never celebrate July 4th!” Just so we are clear,

It’s not hard to say when it started in Portugal initiated the transatlantic slave trade. Again if you go into the past of any country ofc the morality isn’t going to match the modern day. You can apply this logic to say no country is great, which is fine but I’ll just say the U.S. is great relatively.

Ill definitely say no country is great. And to end this where i think we can both agree- while I think america is kinda awful, its potential is limitless. We both can probably agree that objectively, our citizens have managed to push against some of the worst that could exist and moved toward a brighter future And I at the very least, can celebrate those citizens who are apart of this nations history, even if I cant celebrate the history itself wholeheartedly

You didn’t rlly address why any of the history I pointed out wasn’t great you just pointed to other bad things. I think the ideals and principles of the revolution were great.Since the U.S. has been a world leader the world has been the most prosperous and peaceful. That’s obviously not a coincidence, the U.S. has done a lot to ensure things like free trade and international institutions.

No your analysis should be relative other wise your analysis is grounded by nothing and is meaningless. I don’t get the point of virtue signaling that the U.S. is bad when every country is bad at that point the statement is meaningless. A country is made up of its citizens so idk ig I agree but now you’re listing good things about the U.S..

I could argue but meh, no real point on yik yak Tldr It feels ignorantly nationalistic to point all these things out as good, instead of fully understanding that most of these “good” things only come about from our nations of aggression, oppression, and violence Either way, agree to disagree here

I don’t think that’s rlly our disagree. You just set a standard where you can’t be disproven bc every country is bad. If every country doesn’t meet your imaginary standard then maybe your imaginary standard shouldn’t be used. I also guessing you don’t rlly have a standard we’re just virtue signaling US bad.

You can point out good things while saying other things are bad. I would say pointing out the good things is just as important if not more important bc it’s good to have a proven standard we can work towards. It not nationalistic or ignorant to say your country has done some good things. If that’s nationalism then we’re all nationalist at this point lol.
