Genuine question: It seems to me that Puerto Rico doesn’t want to join the Union nor do they want to leave. They generally distrust the U.S. People & institutions. Yet they complain abt “neglect”, (Bad🐰’s ⚡️for instance). How can this be?

They do not want to join if allowed admittance by Congress, yet they will not leave when given a referendum, and yet still pay complain colonialization. They have time again been offered better conditions and terms yet refuse at each term.

I mean both can be true and make sense to be true in my opinion. They’re victims of American imperialism so of course they resent the United States. Being a territory means that they have no independence and are highly dependent on the United States for help with things like infrastructure, whereas the us is mostly interested in extracting their resources, not providing any type of quality of life like what even poor us states would have. How to move forward is a question for sure, the -

I am not 1 adverse to “dangerous freedom”, yet if one desires more autonomy, can they not refuse, micro, managerial “neglect“?

Popular sentiment about distrusting the us yet wanting them to provide more aid makes total sense to me tho

Have they not been given everything out of the palm of our hand? The very institutions - commercial, governmental, academic - were ripped, like a minor organs from us, so as to bring up their station. Though not in wealth, pop. Nor ideologically, they are nonetheless conjoined to us as co-=‘s. They have cried of federal neglect, as if by a parent and not a friend; they nash their teeth when aid be offered.

Also look at all the work trump did / is doing to prevent aid dollars from reaching Puerto Rico after he got elected. They are asking for practical help to continue making repairs after hurricane Maria but our federal government is often unwilling to provide it

Would it be fair to have an opt in/opt out system on either the state to federal or individual tax form level?
