I couldn’t give two shits about the half time show bullshit, but I am pretty pissed I gotta get rid of my ring camera now. That’s gotta be one of the biggest backfires in advertising history.

idk how people are surprised by this tbh. like i’ve always maintained that willingly volunteering in aiding a potential surveillance state will lead to a surveillance state. refused to participate in the Ancestry/23&Me shit bc i didn’t want to willingly give out my DNA and the moment the first one went bankrupt they sold all their DNA data. it all just seems like such an obvious next step to me. can’t fathom being shocked by it

Ring had a Super Bowl ad that said they have a new feature that can help you find your dog if it gets lost by using other people’s cameras, so basically ring admitted they’re accessing your camera and using it for surveillance at all times.

Ahhh shit. Considering the backlash I’m seeing online, hopefully they implement something to ask permission (e.g. “someone reported a lost dog in your area, do you want us to look through your footage for anything?”). But Ring’s reputation with law enforcement and contractors accessing footage is already pretty poor

Even before that, there was some stuff about 23andMe using customer data for research. Which is absolutely great (if you have consent, and consent/privacy/alternative uses for data was murky back then), but they patented some of it so they could make money, which is kinda fucked

I actually got kinda far in their internship application process but by the time they reached out I had already accepted an offer somewhere else. Looks like I might’ve dodged a bullet 😅
