I get nervous around US-born black people (not black immigrants) bc my belief that they usually resent me for being white in the south which people presume to mean I dislike black people. Any input on how to get past that belief is greatly appreciated.

In a way you are still making their suffering about your discomfort, so maybe start there.

honestly i get the feeling, im white in the south too, but i just had to get over it and accept that even if they do hate me it's because of how they are treated by other white people and i don't think my discomfort at the idea of someone disliking me is that important. if they dislike me that sucks but i understand why because my people treat them like shit and i can't control how they react to that.

Why do you think they resent you for that?

That’s pretty much where I’m at but that’s why I’m making this post because I don’t want to stay in this mindset at the risk of being a worse person

Because I see other white people being racist a lot and I know I’d resent white people if I was black in this environment

Hmm. Race aside, do you usually care about what people think of you even if they don’t know you?

A little but not much. I’m so much better about it than I used to be

Do you think this is left over from that self-consciousness/anxiety or something different?
