You guys realize the purpose of permitted protest is explicitly to prevent real change from happening right?

There is not a single instance of explicitly “peaceful” protest bringing about change in the US. The civil rights movement was born from the deaths and injuries of countless African Americans. I’m not saying “firebomb a Walmart” but the only reason we’re taught about docile protest in school is to discourage the type of civil disobedience that would bring about real change (I.e. the labor rights movement that gives us weekends and basic labor rights from the late 19th century)

I don’t see what that has to do with my point, unless you’re discrediting all instances of peaceful protest

It’s complicated and would take hours for me to fully explain. The TLDR is it takes both peaceful protest and direct action to make real change happen

That has nothing to do with what I said. I never said peaceful protest was able to cause change by itself

the civil rights movement won because they had good PR, (the images of peaceful protesters being attacked by thuggish cops was extremely sympathetic to many even moderate northerners) and lobbied the US government and put non-violent pressure on it. this was backed with the IMPLIED threat of actually violent civil unrest if action wasn’t taken. if they had just come right off the bat rioting and burning things down, they would have been crushed and played their cards in exchange for nothing.

Niche example for the Pacific Northwest region but the 1974 Kootenai Tribe peaceful protests in Idaho were extremely successful in getting increased federal support and recognizing on

I also generally view striking, boycotts, labor organizing, and obstructionist civil disobedience to all be forms of peaceful protest. The Montgomery bus boycott caused substantive change through economic pressure and it was peaceful.
