imo high quality news reporting is a public service If you’re as rich as Jeff bezos and choose to buy a news org you have an ethical obligation to either operate at a loss or divest yourself. bezos could operate that paper for free forever and not notice

well duh but bezos actively wants to destroy press freedom, because it directly benefits him and his anti-union and exploitative business practices

yeah i know he’s evil… it just especially get me that he’s laying people off for “cost reasons” when he could pay the entire operating cost out of pocket for 100 years and only consume 11% of his 2026 net worth

well the cost thing is legitimate, he’s running the Washington post to try to be as efficient of a business as possible, he couldn’t care less what news they cover as long as there’s a right-wing bias

the nucleus of my point is that the news should only be run as a business insofar as it costs money to run the news shouldn’t be profit motivated if at all possible bc when it is, it turns out toxic to society I know bezos doesn’t care if it’s toxic. That’s my point.

yeah, freedom of the press in the U.S. is dead, media is state-run now
