I feel like it’d be better in some ways but worse in others. Africa wouldn’t have been set back by colonial depopulation and the world would be more multipolar, Africa would be more competitive with Europe and the Arab world. But you also have the aspect where industrialization and the associated healthcare advancements would take longer to occur. So like there’d be upsides and downsides. Africa would be more competitive but in an alternate 2026 would probably be at a lower level of development.

I wouldn’t say healthcare developments would slow, I’d say these advances would just be more spread out throughout the world. If it weren’t for slavery or colonialism, we’d be far better off. The person deemed the “father of gynecology” probably wouldn’t have been the horrible man we know today who’d defile black living bodies but could have been a black man or a native.

The rapid technological development we saw with the Industrial Revolution was a product of English colonial hegemony. The English accumulated wealth in their colonial metropole, then invested in machines to turn American slavery cotton into textiles to sell to their colony in India. The world has been progressing at a slow pace for thousands of years. But technology exploded in the last 200.

The reality is that without colonialism, the world would be more multipolar. That carries obvious benefits. But it wasn’t destined that the Industrial Revolution would happen when it did. It only happened because of a specific set of circumstances in Europe right then. The Congo has been progressing at its own pace for thousands of years. That would have kept happening, but it wouldn’t industrialize suddenly without a catalyst.

I think that without European colonial dominance it would have happened eventually. China, Japan, the arab world, and a number of states in west and east Africa all had their own intellectual traditions. But I do think conquest would have happened either way too. Europe didn’t invent it. With better technology would have come more advanced war no matter what.

This is not apologism for colonial atrocities. That shit was never justified. I just think we have to be realistic about what caused the Industrial Revolution to occur when it did. There’s no universal timer that says “it happens in 1800.” The Industrial Revolution was an aberration in the normally slow, methodical progression of technological advancement.

It wouldn’t have been as bad as it was. America would’ve still belonged to the Natives. Britain didnt invent it true, but they were the ones who excelled the most. At one point the British empire spanned 25% of the world. I’d rather have a delay in the Industrial Revolution than what we see today.

I think that’s a respectable belief to have! You can certainly think that a more multipolar world with less colonial atrocities is worth it even if it means the Industrial Revolution is delayed. I just want to make sure that delay is acknowledged.

I also want to say that anyone trying to justify historical atrocities with “look where we are today” is a piece of shit, particularly because the people committing those atrocities had no noble goals they were just exploitative monsters. I myself am very into the history of non-European civilizations and I just wanted to make it clear what them continuing to progress at their own pace would look like.
