Neither did I until watching a history of Central American every year Poland ball version where I notice something was going on in Panama so I looked into and I guess there were proposals or something

Later in 1869, Ulysses Grant considered the Dominican Republic as a place African Americans could move to. The annexation proposal hfailed on a 28-28 vote in the senate.

Yes but they were terrified of being invaded by Haiti again. And turns out the Americans were even more racist because part of why the proposal was rejected was that Dominicans were too brown so the politicians didn’t want them to become citizens.

Ah a Yucatán situation because I recall the United States refusing to annex the Yucatán out of bigotry tbh that’s probably a good thing knowing the US would probably destroy the ancient temples
