
It depends on what kinda school you’re tryna go to. Top schools that have an emphasis on research during the curriculum? Pretty damn important. State schools that are focused on cranking out primary care docs as outlined in their mission statement? Not as necessary. I didn’t clutch up enough on my MCAT so I’m at a DO school in Louisiana, allegedly according to some of my classmates they did zero research before med school
I’m hoping to go into internal med and then some kind of fellowship like cardio or smth (I’ll be taking STEP as well). You can definitely match into ANY specialty as a DO but it will 100% be more difficult because you have to take STEP and COMLEX both, and you have to fight the stigma of DO. You’re definitely gonna have an easier time matching into gen surg compared to other surgical specialties but it’s definitely possible to do so
