Yep, the south was worse in a lot of ways but it’s often used as a scapegoat to ignore the racism of the north. The north had residential segregation before the south ever made Jim crow. Sundown towns were a mostly northern thing. You can see how violently the Chicago suburbs reacted to MLK in pictures
