Many people don’t know this, but one of Prussia’s most significant and strong alliances was with royalist France in the 1700s against their common enemy, Hapsburg Austria. Prussia ignited a Europe-wide war by launching a surprise attack on Hapsburg Austria in 1740. France entered on Prussia’s side (Britain joined Austria’s side), but Prussia signed a “separate peace” with Austria, leaving France to face Austria and Britain. Then, Prussia re-joined and left again!

This double betrayal was so scandalous that France developed a seething enmity towards Prussia that never really went away until the Cold War. This betrayal is also why France switched to being allies with Hapsburg Austria (against Prussia) for the 7 Years War, which was an insane move as France and Austria were very bitter enemies for hundreds of years. This shocking French Austrian alliance was called “the Diplomatic Revolution” because it was so startling at the time.

Now, in the 1800s, after the Napoleonic Wars, Prussia seemingly did everything in their power to screw over their ally Austria, but I know a little bit less about that.
