Like fix the fact that the 13th amendment of the US constitution which was supposed to abolish slavery, has a loophole called the exception clause which states slavery is legal as a punishment for crime, which is exactly what birthed the industrial prison complex in the first place.

“there shall be no slavery EXCEPT as punishment for crime” is what incentivized the creation of Black codes and vagrancy laws which made it illegal to be black and unemployed.

The exception clause didn't just create a loophole once, it created a permanent economic incentive to keep the pipeline from "free Black person" to "incarcerated laborer" running, and drug policy, private prisons, and prison labor are that pipeline's modern machinery.

We also have the highest incarceration and recidivism rates in the developed world with over 2 million people incarcerated. Prison laborers get paid cents-per-hour and generate over $10 billion in yearly economic output.

These laborers don’t receive basic labor protections, and they are subjected to cruel conditions. There is also documented use of solitary confinement which the UN classifies as human torture. It’s very much a humanitarian crisis, and unfortunately it’s been buried in propaganda.
