(1/2) I disagree, fascism is the near-inevitable result of giving conservatism too much control for too long. The kind of stasis that conservative movements by nature seek to establish is antithetical to human nature. We despise the stagnation that conservatism brings and understand the need for progressive change and improvement.

(2/2) Fascism is the synthesis of those conflicting impulses: it promises radical change and progress, but only directed backward in history. It’s held out as a great resetting that will breathe new life into the conservative mission. Fascism, at bottom, is what conservatism becomes when it’s clear that stasis is untenable.
