I mean “freezing rain” is accurate but that usually refers to hail, not ice that forms on the road after snow refreezes

Freezing rain and hail aren’t the same, freezing rain happens when the air in the clouds is above freezing but the ground temperature is below freezing, so the rain falls as liquid and freezes upon reaching the ground.

Hail happens when the upper reaches of a storm cloud are cold enough to form ice crystals, which is why it can happen in the middle of summer when the ground isn’t even close to freezing but the upper troposphere still is 👍
