Republicans held a trifecta in New Jersey for almost the entirety of the 90s and held the governorship for the majority of the 2010s. Margin wise, New Jersey has become a swing state at the federal level, or atleast a lean state.

By your metric, Republicans have literally held a trifecta in Georgia since 2005. At the national level, GA is a swing state, as is NJ. At the state level, it absolutely is not.

Trump lost NJ by 5.9%, which is absolutely a swing state margin nationally. On the state level, NJ has a Dem trifecta, sure, but since 1990 as you said, it has had an entire decade of Republican trifectas and almost 20 years of Republican governors. Georgia, on the other hand, has had a Republican trifecta for over 20 years.

Margin-wise, NJ is a swing state. NJ has had a Republican governor for the majority of my life and been a tossup gubernatorially for my entire life until this most recent election. Literally, what is your point?

Governor doesn’t always correlate to a red or blue state. Look at NH, VT, or KY. NJ has not been considered a swing state in any presidential race in my lifetime

I totally agree. He was citing state level results though as his claim that NJ is a solidly blue state, so by his metric, it wasn’t. Minnesota has also been blue our whole lives, but it is still considered a swing state. NJ will likely be one of the most competitive states in the next election should trends hold. Granted, Republican gains will likely recede big time, but NJ is becoming closer and closer.
