Impeachment failed because Mitch McConnell made up a rule that you couldn’t convict a former President through the impeachment process, and that the proper venue for that was criminal court. In 2023 when the DOJ indicted him the case was given to a federal judge he appointed who refused to recuse herself and then made several dubious decisions in his favor delaying the case.

Then in 2024 when he was re-elected the DOJ dropped the case due to DOJ policy not to prosecute a sitting President, because the process for charging a sitting President with a crime is impeachment.
