As an engineer, I think the greatest policy issue we’re facing that doesn’t get a spotlight is the maintenance of our infrastructure. People should be getting pretty nervous crossing bridges around now.

I watched a YouTube documentary called Infrastructure, narrated by Yvette Nicole Brown, that mainly is testimonials from semi-truck drivers and it was absolutely eye-opening….

Honestly, a big problem is that the funding isn’t put forward to inspect bridges, so we aren’t really finding out until it already is a problem. For example, in 2021, there was a massive crack spotted in a bridge crossing the Mississippi in Memphis, and they had no idea how long it had been there.

Additionally, you probably remember the key bridge in Baltimore which was struck by a boat. When they were doing the accident report, they found that it lacked a bunch of protections that would have prevented the collapse, but they weren’t uncovered until after it did, and they had to investigate why.

The problem is that it’s politically perilous to invest in anything preventative, because nobody gets credit for something bad NOT happening, you just look like you spent a lot of money on nothing.

Tell me about it. I work in software and we have so much technical debt and tons of bugs that probably drive people crazy. We spend decent bit of time manually fixing issues that we know the root cause of, but fixing the root cause is never prioritized. Fixing stuff and cleaning stuff up doesn’t make money, but new features do 🤠

Atp the amount of time we’ve spent handling a few issues that require manual intervention is literally more than it would take to fix the root cause 💀💀💀

In Philly, our bridges are all safe and receive regular inspections and maintenance when applicable. However, just north of the city, the Burlington Bristol Bridge across the Delaware River was put at high risk of collapse. Even further, the bridge across the Delaware at Frenchtown, NJ is by far the sketchiest I’ve ever been on.
