
My dad’s side is mostly very old English colonial roots, with a bit of Scots and German thrown in (a German baron moved to Charleston SC in like the 1740s). My last name goes back to early colonial Norfolk VA. My mom’s side is primarily more recent Irish and Ulster Scots immigration, with some older English colonial roots. There’s hints of other stuff (Cornwall, Netherlands) when I look at the genealogy, but I can’t guarantee that’s reliable.
I was pretty surprised we seem to not have any Irish in my family. I don’t think any of the immigrants I found were particularly interesting, I could confirm ship logs for about a dozen of them from 1727-1750s. Most interesting story from my ancestors is that my ancestors brother committed the first recorded infanticide/murder-suicide in western Maryland by butchering his family with an axe
Yeah it was a pretty crazy story to read. I can’t find the doc online but I read a clip from the newspaper at the time about it. My mom’s paternal uncle on that side did a ton of research into the family back in the ‘80s. He went to Germany to get more docs of the people who first immigrated, but I don’t think he got further back than their baptism records and maybe their parents’
