After that Andrew Callahan interview I’ve determined that Nick Shirley is genuinely a fucking idiot.

Two things can be true at once. He’s a massive idiot and obvious plant and there is objectively massive fraud in Minnesota. The fraud is only being investigated and revealed to shift news coverage from other more important issues, but it does exist

No one denying it’s not there, massively overblown and pinned to put a target on the Somali community

The somali community has plenty of targets without this fraud. They’re statistically some of the least intelligent and least contributing immigrants we bring in. I’m with you on it being overblown to play coverage for more important news stories, but to argue that the fraud being pointed out is racist is crazy

Dumbass, Somalis are just the republican manufactured “current thing” to be mad about just like Haitians “eating dogs” in 24

Pretty sure like 3-4 inane comments from Vance and Trump based on false news stories and hundreds of millions of dollars in fraud combined with multiple studies on the economic and intellectual impact of Somalians is vastly different.

Based on media presence it’s really not, you also can’t expect asylees from a war torn third world country to immediately be productive, when southern Italians mass immigrated to this country they had the same issues. Seen as having low intelligence, poor education, strange catholic culture, “incapable of assimilaring”, infamous mafia networks far worse than any day care scam, etc… look at them now. Taking in immigrants from these ridiculously poor places and giving them a chance is America

The Somali asylees are exactly what you’d expect from fresh off the boat immigrants from a country in a state as Somalia is in. We’ve done this many times before with many other ethnicities. Italians, Irish, polish I can keep going. Republicans just want a new punching bag

The Haitian story was immediately scrutinized by every major media outlet because it was objectively untrue. The same is not happening for Somalian fraud. The first major group of Somali refugees came in 1996. Expecting an at least neutral ROI on immigrants after a full generation is not unrealistic.

Which of these ethnic groups were found to be functionally mentally handicapped AND are actively engaging in widespread fraud

It’s being twisted by the gop against all Somali immigrants, also what??? It takes generations for immigrations to get established and a significant portion of these Somalis came in the 2010s. The ones from 1996 probably have full citizenship by this point and are definitely a minority in the community

An entire race being “functionally mentally handicapped” is fucking idiotic of course people from a war torn country with low literacy rates aren’t going to have high IQ levels. And yes actually many of these ethnic groups were seen as having lower intelligence or capacity for thought. Particularly the Irish

Somalians are objectively the weakest link of the immigrant community. Estimates put positive economic output of immigrants at 1-5 years. So even by your standards, Somalians are well behind in Minnesota and across the nation. That is either a failure of the state government or a failure of the community. I’d be happy to provide more statistics about the failures of their community if you’d like

I didn’t ask you about public perception, I asked about facts. What is the benefit to the United States of bringing illiterate immigrants into our country. They provide no value to the American people on a social or economic level

I also failed to mention that state legislators are currently compiling evidence that a portion of the Somali fraud is being sent back to support Al-shabaab. The differences between a brief idiotic singling out of Haitians and nearly a decade and a half of economic failure are vast.

I’m talking about historical precedent, it is a fact that we tolerated similar mass migrations in the past of groups who were also disadvantaged in society for multiple generations before finally integrating. Italian, Irish etc gangs and mafias ran entire cities as major problems for DECADES. Far worse than the millions in daycare fraud. We even celebrated this inclusion as the American dream. It’s fundamentally against the values of our country to start singling out immigrant groups.

You can’t just go off raw stats for these complicated sociological assessments of asylees in a completely new country. Or else yeah all these asylee groups from war torn countries will look bad. That’s what the current Stephen Miller wing of the government is trying to accomplish from its white christian nationalist standpoint

My point is yeah obviously asylees from a war torn country are going to have some issues and frankly speaking the issues with these Somalis are way smaller than the issues we dealt with from other immigrant groups back in the 1900s who eventually ended up integrating (my ancestors). We literally just dealt with it because that’s a part of being in this country. Stop the fraud, arrest the perps, continue working on integration efforts. No fucking racial games or scapegoating

When we accepted millions of immigrants from Europe, the vast majority came to this country with at least a semblance of an education and were incredibly grateful to be welcomed into our country. Somalians are from a similar background (albeit their war has lasted since around 1991 so a bit longer than the period of hardship in most countries) and have had a vastly different impact on our nation in terms of social and economic benefit.

Being racist and xenophobic based on the idea that you don’t want non-white people coming into this country is against what Americans stand for. Not wanting immigrants who have only proven to be a liability both socially and economically is not racist nor xenophobic, it is putting data and available information over the idea that the United States needs to be a safety net for the global disenfranchised
