Oh yeah this was some jingoism red scare stuff added by Eisenhower which at the time was claimed to be not explicitly Christian. And now Christian nationalists use these bits which aren’t even as old as my grandpa to claim that this means Christianity is the American religion.

You could argue that it doesn’t refer to any specific religion though. Just a general “god” that many believe in

The most serious example might be when they swear in witnesses and say “so help you god”, but some counties and states now default to a secular one (probably like “do you affirm under penalty of perjury”). I’ve never watched a real trial recently though. Apparently the UK does “I solemnly and sincerely affirm that the evidence I give shall be the truth”

They were a shitty discriminatory idea at the time and they have manifested in even worse outcomes as people don’t realize these aren’t original to the money or the pledge
